BSDCan - The BSD Conference

The 19th1 annual BSDCan was fantastic!

BSDCan, a BSD conference held in Ottawa, Canada, quickly established itself as the technical conference for people working on and with 4.4BSD based operating systems and related projects. The organizers have found a fantastic formula that appeals to a wide range of people from extreme novices to advanced developers.

When?

  • Tutorials: 17-18 May 2023 (Wed/Thu)
  • Conference: 19-20 May 2023 (Fri/Sat)

Location

  • University of Ottawa, in the DMS (Desmarais) building.
  • 55 Laurier Ave East, Ottawa
  • See map for location

Streaming

The talks on Friday and Saturday will be available via streaming. Watch this space.

There will be IRC channels set up. Please install the IRC client of your choice if you want to ask questions. In previous years, we provided an embedded IRC client for you, but not this year. Sorry.

We'll have video up as soon as we can.

IRC Details:

  • network: irc.libera.chat
  • port: 6697
  • channels: #bsdcan #bsdcan-stream1 #bsdcan-stream2 #bsdcan-stream3

HEADS UP: visa conditions

Canada has had new visa requirements since 2016. Please read about Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) on our travel page.

HEADS UP: masks & public health

Updated 2023-03-23 Nobody likes masks. BSDCan is about community, however, and a community protects its weakest members.

We are requiring attendees wear well-fitting, certified N95, KN95, KF94, FFP2, or PM2.5 masks, without vents. Masks must be worn over the mouth and nose during and between all events.

You may briefly raise your mask to drink. While eating, attendees are asked to spread throughout the space and (weather permitting) outdoors. Replace your mask immediately afterwards.

Speakers are not required to wear masks during their session.

If we see your mouth or nose you will get a warning. A second offense will result in immediate expulsion from the conference. If you refuse to leave at our request, UOttawa security will remove you.

Other organizations and businesses around Ottawa might have their own mask policies. We expect our attendees to honor those policies as well. Non-compliance with mask policies can get you kicked out of a business, banned, or even arrested. BSDCan has zero tolerance for not following our requirements or those of any of our host venues.

Masks will not be required at the social event, which is well ventilated and open to the outside.

We recommend you identify a mask that fits your face snugly and comfortably before arriving in Ottawa.

Social

There will be related events (of a social nature, for the most part) on the day before and the day after the conference.
